Cowalfest 2007, 5th - 14th October

\"HighlandCowalfest 2007 will be a special year for the Cowal Walking and Arts festival, now in its fifth year. "We have always presented a programme that showcased the best the Cowal Peninsula can offer in walking in stunning landscape and combined that with a programme of arts events that reflected a West Highland location to give people a real taste of our cultural heritage", said Chair, Russell Bruce . "This year we plan a very special programme", explained Cowalfest Vice Chair, Dorothy Bruce. "The national profile of Highland 2007 will mean we are included in the national publicity of a year long celebration of Highland Culture which will increase exposure of the Cowal Peninsula, a little discovered Highland jewel."

2007 - Scotland's year of Highland Culture

Highland culture is a distillation in words and music of the hardships as well as the joys of life; the sword dance before the battle, the fling in thankful praise of a successful outcome; waulking songs to keep the rhythm of work, haunting voices recalling a rhythm of life broken; the skirl of pipes that drove soldiers to battle and laments over the losses.

Influenced by other cultures, most notably the Irish, the Vikings and more recently the Americans, it is a culture which itself has influenced others, taken around the world not only by emigrants but also by the many merchants, sailors, scholars, traders, fishermen and businessmen who made their impact on shores far from their native land.

In Cowalfest 2007 we will capture just a little of that history, putting a 21st century spin on an old, old, story. Our ‘Story of Cowal’ walks and events will tell something of this fascinating past, providing a vibrant living response to the peninsula’s rich heritage.
